Artivism for the Environment

Laura Johnson October 11, 2019

Sometimes the grief associated with our ailing world can be alleviated by looking for ways to contribute to positive action.

I found and painted three sailboats to help bring attention and awareness to the urgency of climate change issues..

For the Act Now and Tell the Truth boats I chose a bright attention grabbing neon green color, and painted on the powerful words. I named the boats after recently murdered environmental activists. We also attached to the Act Now boat the flags of 12 countries in the global south with their respective death tool (thus far) due to climate change related disasters.

The third sailboat, christened Vaquita, (after the nearly extinct porpoise in the Gulf of California), is used for education and outreach, marches and parades around NYC. I painted endangered species skeletons on the boat and some of the ways they are dying out; fishing industry, pollution, greed, warming habitat etc…

Shark skeleton, suffocated and bled to death after the fishing industry cut the fins off and tossed the animal still alive into the ocean, unable to swim.

Penguin skeleton, died from global warming and reduction of habitat.

The boat is named Vaquita, after the porpoise that is nearly extinct (less than 12 left in the world) due mostly to fishing nets.
